We hired L & J to remodel our bathroom down to the studs. The subcontractors they hired were so unbelievably unprofessional, we should have just stopped the work on the first day and hired someone else. On the first day, they left for around 5 hours and then came for some reason. Someone rang our doorbell and then someone else just walked in through our back door. It was startling but we figured it was just a mistake and it wouldn’t happen again. The subcontractors came everyday for about a week and a half. One of them came everyday in pajamas, didn’t wear shoes in my home, and none of them washed their hands when they used our bathroom. Again, we should have asked them to not come back sooner but we were just ready for everything to be finished.

On the final day, they grouted the tile and said they were all finished. Which when they grouted, all of their mistakes became incredibly noticeable. When we were finally able to get in there and inspect everything, we were absolutely shocked at how awful everything looked. We immediately contacted Luis so we could show walk through everything that was wrong. First off, the tile in our shower niche was completely crooked. We chose a smaller tile and at the top and bottom of the niche, there were whole tiles, some half tiles, and some little tiny tile slivers. Super uneven and inconsistent. Sharpie marks where they drew a line to cut the tile. The floor tile was not level. Some tiles popping out in a way that made the floor so uncomfortable to walk on without shoes and there wasn’t enough grout in any of the tile. Some tiles were even chipped. Also, the floor tile we purchased came in sheets and they didn’t use tile spacers so some of the sheets bumped right up against each other and some were spread further apart so you could see the individual tile sheets as they were laid. They didn’t ask us what direction we wanted the floor tiles to be laid in so where the tile met the wall, there were little tiny triangle pieces that looked like jack-o’-lantern teeth coming out of our base board. They raised the ceiling where our old shower was to be the same height as the rest of the bathroom. There is a big seam line going across the ceiling that I wouldn’t expect to have if done by a professional. There is also a small crack in the ceiling. And everything was filthy after they left. There was no question that just about everything they did looked unprofessional and unattractive.

After pointing all of this out, the subcontractors came back the next day to “fix it.” It looked just as terrible after trying to remediate it so we asked that the subcontractors not come back and we wanted everything removed. It was a big ask but we paid to have our bathroom professionally remodeled and it wasn’t. After some back and forth, they offered to remove the floor tile and caulk around the shower niche to make the tiles look even. They also removed some of the cost of labor, materials since we would have to purchase new tile for the floor, and said they would level the bathroom floor so it would be ready for new tiles to be laid but they wouldn’t be able to do that. All of which we appreciated but we were still very disappointed.

When it was all said and done, the caulking to fix the niche looked horrible. We now have to pay someone to remove it and replace it because there isn’t another way to fix it. They did not level the floor again when they removed the tile so we had to spend additional time and money to do it ourselves. They moved an electric outlet even though we said we could contact our electrician and now it’s so crooked we have to have someone come fix it anyways. So all in all, we ended up paying thousands of dollars to ultimately have to pay someone else to basically redo all of it.
